Change on the Board of Directors
Saturday November 11th, 2006:
I was thrilled and honored to have been elected President of the Chamber of Commerce and was sure that given a little time I'd be able to rise to the position. It's been almost half a year and we've had several board meetings, every time I plan on "getting up to speed" before the next. And every board meeting I find myself unprepared and uninformed. Unfortunately I know so little about the events the chamber sponsors, the people involved and the position of president that I haven't "gotten up to speed". The Chamber President needs to be able to lead, not follow. This is far too important an undertaking to simply try to slide through. The president needs to be someone who is already "up to speed", it shouldn't be delegated to an apprentice, no matter how confident that student is of eventual learning. Therefore, I have asked Fonda Garringer to take over the position of President, and offered my services as her vice-president. I am absolutely confident that I can be of great service to her, and the board of directors, as well as the chamber in that position. More importantly, Fonda is already "up to speed" having been a director for several years and having participated in all of the chamber events in the past. She knows everyone, her husband Ray is not only a County Supervisor, but also a past Chamber President himself and obviously able to advise and assist her in this position. I do this not because I am unwilling or lack the desire to "do the job", but only because I realize that I am simply not qualified to do the job as effectively as it needs to be done.
I've spoken with and gotten unanimous approval from all of the other members of the Board of Directors so next Wednesday at the full membership meeting I will announce the change. I am sure everyone will support this change and the Chamber will be well served by our new President Fonda Garringer.
